I want to talk to the person whose anxiety about being a good person has become its own kind of suffering.
You spend hours a week thinking about whether things you said were right. You replay conversations to check for cruelty. You seek reassurance from people you trust. The relief lasts an hour. Then the doubt returns.
This has a name. It is called morality OCD, or scrupulosity. It is a specific mental health pattern that shows up in the most conscientious people. Their sincerity itself has been turned against them.
What It Is
The obsessions: What if I am a bad person? What if I am secretly selfish?
The compulsions: mental review, reassurance seeking, confession compulsions, avoidance, repeating actions, compulsive prayer.
Where It Comes From
Authoritarian upbringing. Religious environments emphasizing sin. Sensitive temperament. Early experiences of being labeled bad. Trauma or moral injury. Neurological predisposition.
How It Differs From Moral Maturity
Maturity feels grounded. OCD feels chronically threatened. Maturity produces action. OCD produces rumination. Maturity handles gray. OCD demands black and white. Maturity trusts your compass. OCD cannot.
What Actually Helps
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). The evidence-based treatment.
Reducing reassurance seeking.
Distinguishing OCD thoughts from your actual thoughts.
Working with underlying trauma.
Medication, in some cases. SSRIs.
Self-compassion practice.
