I want to share a frame on addiction that changes how you approach recovery.
Every addictive behavior — substances, screens, sex, food, work, shopping — is doing the same underlying thing. Taking you away from the self you would otherwise have to be with.
The specific object changes. The mechanism does not. This is why addiction is not really about the substance. The substance is a vehicle for the leaving.
Recovery that works is not primarily about the object. It is about learning to stay with the self you have been leaving.
What Self-Abandonment Means
Before you reach, there is a self experiencing something — a feeling, memory, truth — that would need to be met if you stayed. The reach is the decision to leave that self.
Over years, the self who was needing you learns you are not coming. The interior gets flatter. This is what many describe as numbness.
What the Self Has Been Trying to Say
Unmetabolized grief. Old trauma. Chronic loneliness. Purpose deficit. Nervous system dysregulation. Unlived potential. Spiritual hunger. Fear of a specific truth.
How to Begin Staying
Identify what you have been leaving. Practice tiny meeting. Get skilled help. Address neurology. Build a life the self wants to stay in. Forgive years of leaving. Expect the yo-yo.
A Gentle Invitation
If something here met you and you’d like to talk it through, I offer a free 15-minute consultation.
