The Knot in Your Stomach: How Anger Lives in the Body and How to Work With It

I want to talk about the place in the body where anger has been living for you, waiting to be released.

For many people, it is a specific knot in the stomach. A tightness that lives just below the sternum. Present most of the time.

You have talked about your anger. You have journaled. And still the knot is there. Because anger does not fully live in words. It lives in the body.

Why Anger Lives in the Stomach

The vagus nerve has a major branch in the abdomen. When you cannot fight back, cannot flee, cannot express, the diaphragm tightens as part of the freeze response. Over time, the tightness becomes chronic.

Why Talking Has Not Been Enough

Talking engages the prefrontal cortex. Anger lives in the limbic system and body. You can understand your anger perfectly and still have the knot. Real release requires engaging the system where the anger lives.

Signs of Somatic Anger

Chronic tightness in the upper abdomen. Digestive symptoms. Difficulty taking deep breaths. Random surges of frustration. Explosive moments you regret.

Somatic Practices That Release Held Anger

Attention to the knot itself. Deep belly breathing. Hands on the belly. Physical release through movement — walking, dancing, boxing, shaking. Sound release. Somatic experiencing therapy. EMDR or Brainspotting. Trauma-informed therapist.

What Release Feels Like

Knot softens. Breathing deeper. Digestion improves. Everyday anger more proportional. Sleep deepens. Grief may surface — anger often protects grief.
