I want to give you a small daily practice that rebuilds the internal compass you were not given as a child.
The practice is one sentence.
Before you check with anyone — your friend, mother, pastor, therapist, ChatGPT — about whether what you did was right, check with yourself first.
Sit with the question. What do I actually think? What is my own read?
Then, if you still want to consult someone external, you can. But the first move is inward.
Why You Have Been Skipping This
As a child, consulting yourself first was punished, dismissed, or overridden. What the authority said mattered. You learned your own compass was not to be trusted.
The compass has atrophied because it has not been used. Using it, deliberately, brings it back online.
How to Practice
One: notice the impulse to consult externally.
Two: pause and sit with the question. At least sixty seconds.
Three: name what you think or sense.
Four: notice the quality of your own knowing.
Five: distinguish your read from imagined reads of others.
Six: act on your read at least sometimes.
Seven: when you consult, do it as one input.
What Changes Over Time
Weeks 1-4: muscle is weak. Weeks 4-12: your read arrives faster. Months 3-6: compass becomes reliable. Months 6-12: compass becomes primary. Beyond a year: functional internal moral compass.
