I want to talk about the single spiritual reorientation that, more than any other, unlocks a stuck Christian life.
For the person whose gifts are real but not moving. Whose calling has been clear for years but who has not stepped into it. Whose voice, when they speak, is a filtered, edited, softened version of what actually lives in them. Whose low mood does not respond to therapy, medication, prayer, or effort — and who cannot figure out why.
You have been fearing the wrong person.
Not God. People. The specific and particular people whose approval you have been living for, whose disapproval you have been organizing your life to avoid, whose opinions have been running the show underneath your conscious spiritual life for as long as you can remember.
I want to share what I see in this work.
The Bible calls this fear of man. Proverbs is unambiguous: “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.” The word snare is precise. Fear of man is a trap. It looks like humility. It looks like being considerate. It looks like being a good, agreeable, non-conflictive person. It is actually the primary spiritual bondage of most sincere Christians, and it is what is stealing your life.
The corresponding reorientation — fear of God — is not being afraid of Him. It is the settled inner reverence that treats His opinion as the one that finally matters, and every other opinion as noise by comparison.
What Fear of Man Actually Looks Like
You edit yourself at home. In-laws, family of origin, spouse’s people — you have a subtly filtered version of yourself for each of them.
You edit yourself at church. You wear the acceptable expression, hold the acceptable opinions. Parts of your faith journey that would not be received get quietly buried.
You edit yourself in public. Constant micro-calibrations of who you appear to be based on who is watching.
You edit yourself online. The YouTube video you did not post. The book you did not publish. The Substack you did not send.
You edit yourself with yourself. Even alone, you are watching yourself through the imagined eyes of the people whose approval you need. Even prayer becomes a performance.
Why It Is the Root Under So Many Other Problems
Low mood that does not respond to treatment. The low mood is not chemical. It is grief, quiet and constant, about the self you are not being permitted to be.
Stalled career or calling. Every visible step forward exposes you to more people’s opinions, so you unconsciously sabotage the visibility your gifts require.
Chronic indecision. You cannot decide what you want because your preferences have been drowned out by decades of preferring what others would approve of.
Physical symptoms. Chronic tension, TMJ, digestive issues, chronic fatigue.
Spiritual dryness. When prayer becomes performance, the dryness follows naturally.
What Fear of God Actually Is
Fear of God is the settled inner recognition that He is the ultimate authority in your life, and that His view of you is the only view that finally matters. It is reverence combined with intimacy.
For the person who has fear of God, other people’s opinions still exist. They just weigh less. Approval feels good. Disapproval stings. Neither runs the show.
This person can walk into any room and stay themselves. They can post the video. They can publish the book. They can hold the unpopular position with kindness. They can leave the environment that requires them to edit themselves.
How the Reorientation Happens
One: name the fear of man where you find it. Every time you notice yourself editing, filtering, or performing, name it silently.
Two: notice who specifically you are afraid of. Not “people.” Specific people.
Three: bring the specific fear to God directly. “Lord, I am editing myself right now because I am afraid of what [person] will think. I am giving that fear to You.”
Four: take one small action from fear of God instead. Post the thing. Say the true thing. Small acts of fear-of-God change the underlying pattern faster than any amount of thinking.
Five: repeat, daily, for months.
Six: get support. A spiritual director, a Christian therapist, or a small circle of people who are also doing this work.
What Happens When the Reorientation Lands
Your voice releases. Your gifts move. Your low mood lifts. Your prayer life deepens. Your relationships get honest. Your body relaxes. You become people others want to be around because you are finally being yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Isn’t caring what people think just being considerate?
Consideration adjusts tone wisely. Fear of man edits the substance of who you are to be acceptable. The first is love; the second is bondage.
How do I know if I’m operating in fear of God or fear of man?
Fear of God produces peace, courage, honesty, movement. Fear of man produces tightness, self-editing, stalling, low mood.
What if my fear of people feels justified?
Wariness of unsafe people is not fear of man. Fear of man is chronic organizing of your life around others’ approval.
