Your Body Is Storing What You Won’t Say: Fibroids, Pain, and the Suppressed Anger of Christian Marriages

Safety note: If you are in danger, call 911. National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233.

I want to tell you something the body has been trying to tell you for years.

The fibroids did not come from nowhere. The pelvic pain is not a mystery. The chronic stomach issues. The autoimmune flares. The exhaustion no amount of sleep fixes. The headaches that always seem to land on the days after he has been raging.

These are not separate from the marriage. They are the marriage, speaking through the only channel you have not been able to silence.

I want to share what I see in this work.

The body of a Christian wife living with chronic suppressed anger keeps score. Every swallowed truth. Every “I am fine” said when she was not. Every reconciliation she performed before her body had caught up. All of it goes somewhere. The somewhere is her tissues, her organs, her cycles, her nervous system. By the time the symptoms arrive, the marriage has already been costing her health for years.

What the Body Has Been Holding

A wife who has been in a chronically difficult marriage — anger, gaslighting, contempt, unpredictability — is in chronic stress. Her body is in fight-or-flight on a low simmer most of the time. Cortisol is elevated. Inflammation rises. Digestion suppresses. Sleep dysregulates. The systems God designed for occasional emergency are running constantly.

On top of the chronic stress, there is the specific weight of suppressed anger. Anger is a survival emotion. It is meant to alert you to violation and move you to protect yourself. When you swallow it — over and over, day after day, in the name of being a peaceful wife — it does not disappear. It collects. It looks for a place to land in the body. Often it lands in the gut. In the pelvic floor. In the womb. In the immune system that starts attacking itself because it has not had permission to attack the actual stressor.

This is not metaphor. This is documented in trauma medicine, in psychoneuroimmunology, in the work of Bessel van der Kolk and many others. The body keeps score.

The Patterns I See

Fibroids that appear in a season of high marital stress. Pelvic pain that does not respond to standard medical treatment. Endometriosis flares that track to specific conflicts. Chronic vaginal tension or pain during intimacy.

Stomach issues — IBS, gastritis, chronic nausea — that the woman has tried to manage with diet for years while ignoring the relational pattern that triggers them.

Autoimmune conditions — thyroid dysregulation, lupus flares, rheumatoid arthritis — that appeared or worsened in the years of chronic marital stress.

Migraines that arrive predictably after conflict. Insomnia that shows up the night he raged and lingers for weeks.

Chronic fatigue that no test can fully explain.

A loss of libido that the woman blames herself for, when the truth is that her body is no longer willing to open to a partner who has been unsafe.

These are not separate medical mysteries. These are one body, telling the truth about one marriage.

Why This Is Especially Important for Christian Wives

There is a particular pressure on Christian wives that intensifies this dynamic. The pressure to be peaceful, to forgive quickly, to honor the husband even when he is dishonoring her, to not air the marriage’s struggles, to keep going.

This pressure produces wives who are extraordinary at silencing what their bodies are saying. They have built entire identities around being the calm one, the gracious one, the long-suffering one. The cost of that identity is, often, their health.

Honoring your body is not dishonoring God. The body is His. The truth your body is telling is not less spiritual than the silence you have been calling spiritual. If anything, the truth is closer to Him. He did not design you to slowly erode in the name of marriage.

What Listening Actually Looks Like

Start a log. Just a note on your phone. Every flare. Every symptom. Every bad pain day. Write down what happened in the 48 hours before. After two weeks, look at the pattern. The correlation will usually be obvious.

Stop performing wellness. When you are in pain, say you are in pain. When you are exhausted, say you are exhausted. Stop saying “I am fine” when your body is screaming.

Start letting the anger move. In private, in safe ways. Yell into a pillow. Punch a couch. Move the body. Cry. Write the letters you will never send. The anger does not need to be expressed at him. It needs to come out of you.

Take it to God in unedited prayer. Tell Him exactly how angry you are. Tell Him exactly how scared. Tell Him exactly how tired. He is not surprised.

Get medical support and somatic support. The body that has been holding this for years sometimes needs both. A trauma-informed therapist who does somatic work. A doctor who takes the relational context seriously. A pelvic floor physiotherapist if pelvic pain is part of the picture.

What the Body Does When She Finally Listens

When the Christian wife finally starts to listen to her body and tell the truth about her marriage — even if she is not yet ready to make any external change — something starts to shift.

The pain often decreases within weeks. Not because the marriage is fixed, but because the body is no longer being asked to carry alone what is hers to carry. Her sleep deepens. Her digestion stabilizes. The headaches space out. The fatigue lifts in places.

This is not a guarantee. Some illnesses, once established, take longer or require ongoing treatment. But the trajectory often changes. The body that knows it is finally being heard stops shouting so loud.

This is also what restores spiritual presence. The wife who has been somatically shut down has been spiritually shut down too. As the body wakes up, prayer comes back. Worship hits differently. The Holy Spirit’s voice gets audible again.

What This Is Not

This is not blame. Your symptoms are not your fault.

This is not a guarantee that listening will resolve everything. Some health conditions require ongoing medical care. Some marriages require larger decisions than honest listening can solve.

This is not a replacement for medical care. Take your body to doctors. Take your symptoms seriously medically. And take them seriously relationally. Both at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can suppressed anger really cause fibroids?
The research does not draw a single straight line, but chronic stress, inflammation, and hormonal dysregulation are all documented contributors, and all three are amplified by chronic marital stress. Many of the women I sit with see meaningful improvement when they begin honestly addressing the relational context alongside medical care.

What if I do not feel angry — I just feel sad and tired?
The exhaustion and sadness often sit on top of the anger. Underneath sustained collapse, there is usually rage that has not had permission to surface.

Do I need to leave my husband to heal physically?
Not necessarily. Many women find significant healing while staying — once they stop swallowing the truth, start communicating honestly, and begin the somatic work. Some women do need to leave. The body usually clarifies which over time.
